The changing seasons bring with them a range of emotions, and for many Black women, this shift can show up in what is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Beyond feeling the weight of the shorter days and colder weather, SAD can deeply impact mental health, productivity, and overall well-being. To combat this seasonal enemy, three unseen strategies are tailored specifically for Black women to conquer Seasonal Mood Disorder.
1. Bask in the Power of Sunlight
During the darker months, sunlight becomes a precious commodity! One we didn't know we needed! As a black woman from the South soaking in the sun is an old and new pastime but between working from home and daylight savings time we lose precious hours of sunlight. As Black women, our melanin-rich skin has unique strengths and specific light exposure needs. The first secret to overcoming seasonal mood dips is to seize every opportunity to soak in natural light. Whether it's a brisk walk during lunch break or strategically placing yourself near windows if you are working from home. You can make sunlight your ally in the battle against SAD. Do your best to opt for high-sun environments as much as possible.
2. Nourish Your Body, Nourish Your Mind
The foods we consume play a crucial role in how our bodies function and how our minds feel. For Black women combating seasonal mood disorders, a holistic approach to nutrition can work wonders. Embrace foods rich in Vitamin D, which is not only beneficial for bone health but also mental well-being. Include mood-boosting nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds. Do your best to uncomplicate your meals! The first thing I suggest is to buy what is in season. This will allow your meals to be colorful, flavorful, and affordable! Foods like apples, broccoli, clementines, and pumpkin are just a few seasonal staples to add to your diet this time of the year. Secondly, I suggest prioritizing protein, find you a few good sources of protein and spice them up. Lastly, as the weather gets cooler explore soup recipes. Take the time to craft meals that not only nurture your body but also your spirit.
3. Embrace Joyful Movement
Exercise is often touted as a remedy for various health woes, and when it comes to seasonal mood disorders, the same principle holds true. For Black women, the movement can be a potent tool in the fight against SAD. Engage in forms of exercise that bring you joy, whether it's dancing, yoga, or hitting the gym. Use this time of the year to switch it up! I have a small set of weights in my garage and a small trampoline that I use for jumping! Physical activity releases endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators, helping you combat the emotional rollercoaster that can accompany seasonal changes. Find what movement speaks to your soul, and make it a non-negotiable part of your routine. If you find it difficult to keep moving download an audiobook and listen to a chapter or two while you move! Use your favorite music application to create a playlist that is at least 30 minutes long and make sure you listen to all the songs before you stop! Lastly, get a partner! Having someone to share in your movement makes it that much fun.
Embrace Your Radiance
As a Black woman navigating seasonal mood disorders, embracing these strategies can provide a shield against the darker days. Remember, your well-being is paramount, and conquering SAD is not just about surviving but thriving. You want to focus on your well-being and not just your health. Focus on how you feel in your body, the quality of your sleep, and your relationships. Be sure to take advantage of the sun while you can, nourish your body with intent, and move with a spirit of joy. I hope these strategies and tips empower you in this upcoming season!
